The latest Liquid Telecom terrestrial fibre map

L.S.M Kabweza Avatar

We received the latest fibre map that Liquid Telecom presented recently at AfricaCom. The map shows what the terrestrial fibre network’s overall footprint in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and DRC. It’s not clear if all of this is completed but most of it surely is.

Some sections of the network, those in South Africa and Botswana were not built (nor are owned) by Liquid Telecom directly. It’s through partners. The Zambia section was implemented by a company called CEC Liquid Telecom, in which Liquid Telecom and Copperbelt Energy Corporation have 50% participating interest.

Here’s the map. You can click on it for a higher res version.

You can also download the pdf document containing the map (1,400kb) from Liquid that contains the map and other information about the fibre project.

I remember going to a presentation by Powertel in 2002 and they showed us a similar map of their plan to build a network across South Africa. Parastatals in Zim have brilliant ideas but execution is the greatest challenge. Its no surprise companies like Liquid will benefit from such expertise.

The map you have provided says that there is vibre optic coverage. This is not true.
