Telecel introduces cheaper WhatsApp bundles, offers bonus data for early sign ups

Telecel WhatsApp Bundles

Telecel has amped up its broadband services game with an introduction of their own WhatsApp bundles(finally). Priced for daily, weekly or monthly unlimited access to the WhatsApp service they act in the same way as the Econet variant released earlier this year.

The WhatsApp bundles have proved to be successful for Econet, with the IM service accounting for close to a quarter of the Internet traffic for the network. Telecel will no doubt experience a huge spike in internet with this new development. The bundles have drastically lowered the costs of multi media sharing and promoted the virality of video and audio clips.

To purchase the bundles, subscribers can dial *480# or SMS the letter ‘W’ to 33480.

The Telecel bundles are slightly cheaper than Econet’s version though. The daily bundle is set at 29 cents, the weekly bundle costs 89 cents and the monthly bundle is set at  $2,85. The Econet’s own option is pegged at 30 cents, 95 cents and $3.00 for the respective daily, weekly and monthly bundles.

Telecel is also sweetening the deal for early sign-ons to the service with bonus data that can be used for other broadband services. The weekly bundle gets you 5 MB if you’re one of the first 100 to sign on and the monthly bundle comes with 20 MB data for the first 500 subscribers to sign-up.

These bundles are the latest broadband product to be offered by Telecel. Exactly one month ago the MNO introduced Facebook Zero which offers broadband subscribers free Facebook access.

Imitation is the sincerest of flattery…. is the saying that came to my mind. But then hey it makes if increases revenue you might as well try it. Question is where will Netone be while all this is taking place? will they also adjust their revenue models?

Net*One is not worried about revenue IMO. I believe they are happy making $xxx from 1+ million subscribers. No need for more base stations etc. and as such most of their revenue is profit.

Think about it this way (random example) Net*One spent $1million building a network. They borrowed this money ten years ago and paid it back 5 years ago. Now the network supports 1 million subscribers. Which means that now the network is paid for, so why kill a working profit machine. Spend minimum and dont worry about borrowing more. Very simple example but the point I am trying to make is clear. (and yes they have paid for 3g expansion etc. but still what they pay is a drop in the ocean compared to EWZ) much easier to support 1-2million subscribers vs 8million.
