Apple Event 2014 – One more thing?

Apple’s first phablet, the iPhone 6 Plus

Just in case you missed it among the flurry of social media updates and countless reports, yesterday tech giant Apple held its annual fall event that has become the launch pad for new products.

Its the one event that very Apple fan-boy was excited about and the expectations were pretty high. The question is did Apple live up to the usual “Steve in September” hype? Was this just “one more thing” on the annual tech calender or was it as groundbreaking and industry disruptive as it has always been?

In all of the noise and debates for and against the hardware expose’ the most important facts that have come out of yesterday’s event that point to the company’s product future include:

The new iPhone 6 (Release date 19 September)

The new iPhone 6

There are two new models for Apple’s iconic phonethe iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus which is Apple’s first phablet. The two devices are larger (4.7 and 5.5 inches respectively), thinner, reportedly more powerful (A8 processor) and set to be more energy efficient.

It’s what everyone has been expecting- a leap to the large screen perspective of things. We all can’t wait to get our hands on both devices and see how they stack up against current big phones from perennial rivals Samsung, LG and HTC.

Apple Pay

NFC payment through Apple Pay

This is Apple’s new NFC payment system allowing payment at select stores. It is coming to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus next month.

You add your credit card info then you’ll be able to touch your phone to make payment. Your number is stored by Apple behind a secure element. When you are buying something, the Touch ID sensor confirms your identity, and for each sale your phone creates a device-specific card number.

New iOS 8 Release

The free OS upgrade is set for release on the 17th of September, two days before the new iPhone models. This is one bit that every Apple user was keen on since its the annual boost that everyone in the ecosystem is privileged to get their hands on.

Apple Watch

The Apple Watch

Oh, one more thing – The Apple Watch. The highly anticipated smart watch(its about time) comes in two sizes and three models. There is Watch, Watch Sport and Watch Edition.

Complete with Siri integration, health monitoring and GPS its going up against everything from Samsung’s Gear to the Moto 360. Until we get a chance to try it (Release is set for early 2015 starting at $350 )all we can say is its surely to going to be the perfect expensive Valentine’s gift.

Are you an Apple or Android user/fan? What were your thoughts on all these new releases and which one will you be quick to buy? Is this what you expected and how do you think Apple will fare this year with this product line?

The iPhone will sell will more units most iPhone users were calling for a bigger screen and its here. IOS for me is the biggest selling point, smooth easy to use, and integrates seamlessly with the hardware. Apple makes very solid devices, i support them, well till i can afford an iPhone 6, im stuck with Android

When Samsung had its address last week, the first thing i did was open techzim, and nothing! apple had its keynote yesterday there is already an article. Just makes me realise blogging is about the writer not the reader. Sad!!

Well yah – welcome to the internet! Its ALWAYS been like that. Blogging is at the point of view of the writer, its been like that since day one! That’s why you are also allowed to open your own blog and say what YOU want.

I guess the main take away for mere mortals like me is the upcoming flux of cheap(er) used and new 5’s and 5s’s as people upgrade! As for the watch though, i think i’m more excited about the LG G Watch R. As chunky as it is, I love the low key chrono look.

Nothing new. Except that I can buy the older devices much cheaper now. Everyone’s been there, done that.

Like Blackberry, they decided they own the crown so delayed bringing on the bigger screens and phablets… NFC… how old is that?!!!

    Shame
