Just last month we had Startup Weekend Harare “2.0” and from that a couple of startup teams from that marathon decided to compete on a world stage. The good news is both teams have now made the final twenty in the Global Startup Battle.
Food Match and Mhuri Yethu were respective winner and runner up of the Startup Weekend Harare and the two teams spent the proceeding couple of weeks canvassing for votes to be eligible for the next round of the Global Startup Battle.
This global startup challenge is a Global Entrepreneurship Week initiative that pits teams from different Startup Weekend competitions around the world against each other. The teams get to enter in certain categories that relate to the work the problem being solved by their startup solution.
Thanks to the support they got plus merit from a panel of judges, they have both been shortlisted in one of the categories, the Do the KIND Thing Track. This category focuses on startup ideas that have both a profit motive and are have a great social impact. It is sponsored by American food company KIND snacks.
The two startups will now be judged by another panel that will select the best teams from the group of twenty. Competition is bound to be stiff as the finalists were bumped up from a total of 15 to the current 20 because of the ideas being showcased.
