Tethering is when you turn your smartphone device into a mobile WiFi hotspot and share your internet connection with other devices.
Once tethering is turned on any device with wireless capability is able to connect to the internet via your smartphone, consuming whatever data provisions you device has.
With tethering, you can essentially share your mobile data with anyone, given you have provided them with the Wifi hotspot password you created.
The sharing of internet extends to all data bundles too. Yes, you can share your “social media” bundles with family and friends, and it is completely legal.
Not to get into complicated technical details, the device tethering acts as a bridge for other devices to access all the internet resources they have been granted permission to access, including Whatsapp, Twitter, Facebook and Opera bundles, however, data is still limited depending on the bundle your purchased.
Internet sharing works across all devices and operating systems. An iPhone can share its mobile data to Samsungs, HTCs or even a Sony, and across any operating system too (android, windows mobile etc).
So here is how you turn on internet sharing and activate a WiFi hotspot:
On Android:
- Go to your Android phone’s on-screen Menu
- Look for Settings, then Wireless & Networks, then Portable WiFi hotspot
- Open the Portable WiFi hotspot settings to set up a password and name your phone’s hotspot.
On iPhone:
- Go to your iPhone’s Settings
- ->Look for Personal Hotspot; or General, followed by Network, and finally Personal Hotspot
- ->Tap on Personal Hotspot and then slide the switch to On
- ->Then connect the iPhone to your laptop, mobile or tablet using WiFi.
- ->To Switch it off, Follow Steps 1-3, slide the switch to Off
On Windows Mobile:
- On Start, flick left to the App list, tap Settings > Internet sharing.
- ->Turn Sharing to On > Tap Setup.
- ->On the Internet sharing screen, do the following:In the Broadcast name box, type a network name. This is the name that you and others will see and use to connect to your shared connection over Wi-Fi on another device. Tap Security type, and then tap Password required (WPA2) or None (open). If you selected Password required (WPA2) for Security type, in the Password box, type a password that’s required to connect to and use your shared connection.
- ->and then tap Done:
So you can pool together your resources and buy a daily, weekly or monthly bundle for Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp or even Opera bundle and share it among each other. The type of data bundle you decide to purchase is entirely up to you, your preference and how you intend to use it.
Please not that sharing internet is extremely resource heavy. The phone sharing internet should be put on charge if possible and set in a cool place in case of overheating.
This is not a permanent fix to high data prices but it can help you get online on tough days so try it out and let us know if it helps.

You forgot to tell them that any losses incurred are solely their own responsibility since the service provider, did not recommend your prescription to conserving credit ????
Yaa tell him bro, uda kuchenjedza maMNO this article. I don’t think ots possible to tether using Econet bundles or its my fone..??
I support you, we were doing this already and now expect MNOs to find a way of stopping this!
From what i have gathered, they have no way of stopping this, it’s an issue of having the technologies to stop it and also legislation, even in Europe and best case america, mno’s failed to have tethering banned
It’s very possible, I did it before posting this article
this isn’t what we asked for TechZim.
NetOne facebook bundle vs Econet facebook bundle speed test, make it happen.
I hear you, do you have any suggestions on how to do it, all my research is hitting walls, at the moment all we could possibly do is upload a video file to each network and test speed to download completion etc,
you could go with that, same video size, make sure all devices are subscribed to facebook bundles ONLY and nothing else. I’m sure we’re in for a big surprise here, let’s see if we’ll indeed get that 20Mbps speed. ⚡
Basically we would create a simulation of chats and check performances
NetOne facebook bundle vs Econet facebook bundle speed test, make it happen…..
Econet Facebook bundle is capped and the speed is throttled…. Do a test batsi
All MNOs really need to be exposed, we cannot rejoice having a speed of 20Mbps yet it takes 10mins to download a 5Mb video using WhatsApp bundles, that’s some serious level of throttling there!
