A data center is simply a room with many computer servers connected together. They are typically used by organizations for the remote storage, processing, or distribution of large amounts of data. Data centers have been around for a while now and some Zimbabwean companies have them for private use. Telone recently lauched a data center so it’s natural for one to wonder how they can benefit from it.

In the case, that an Internet service provider is also running a data center, it means that you will get more bandwidth since you don’t need to share it with the whole internet as you would if you were using your own connection. Another advantage is that since it is a local data center, your data doesn’t need to travel around the world to another data center and back. The speed benefits become very noticeable if you’re running a digital business that has a lot of users accessing a lot of data at the same time.

Back in the day, when you had to store or process a lot data, you typically had to set up a private data center. Even if you were to get the cheapest servers for the data center, to get everything running would still be expensive as there is cabling and other infrastructure involved. Apart from the initial setup cost, there is the recurring maintenance cost of keeping the room cool and having backup power often in the form of a fuel powered generator. Since we now have a local data center, chances are that it could end up costing less than using ones available overseas.
