Instagram recently announced that they now have 500 million daily active users and 800 million monthly users. In that announcement, they also revealed some upcoming features to the social media app that will increase safety when using it and promote kindness.

You can now choose who can comment on your posts

Various tools to help you manage the comments experience on your posts have been launched by Instagram through its existence. One such tool was launched in June, it is a filter which uses artificial intelligence to automatically block certain offensive comments in English. Instagram has now expanded the filter to include Arabic, French, German and Portuguese languages.

Apart from that, Instagram is now giving you more control over who can comment on your posts. If your account is public, you’ll see a new way to choose who can comment on your posts. So you can restrict comments to come from everyone or to just groups of people, like people you follow or your followers.

Also, whether your account is public or private, you’ll be able to block other accounts from commenting on your posts. To increase safety on Instagram, they have also introduced the following.

Anonymous reporting for Instagram Live videos

This new feature is aimed at helping people stay safe from themselves when doing Instagram Live videos. So someone might be doing an Instagram Live broadcast and a viewer notices that the broadcaster isn’t in the best state of mind.

Maybe the broadcaster starts self-harming or they could even be about to attempt suicide. The viewer could then anonymously report the video for the broadcaster’s safety. The person broadcasting will get a notification on their screen that could be the prompt that they needed to not act up those thoughts.

Kindness Walls and new Stickers

Over the next few months, Instagram will be turning walls in cities around the world into colorful pieces of artwork painted or applied directly on a wall (murals) using the different pictures people will take. The event aims to inspire kind comments on the social media app.

To participate, visit a wall, take a photo or video and share using #KindComments. There will be a new kindness-themed heart-shaped sticker for you to add to these pictures. Both the murals and stickers will be created by artists from the global community.

Let us know what you think about these new features that have been added to Instagram. Are you a regular user of the app and do these features make the experience better for you? What would you like to see added to it?
