When the mobile registration deadline expired last month, the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) conceded to a one month grace period before mobile operators start disconnecting unregistered subscribers. The grace period expires tomorrow.
As it approaches, Econet has started issuing warnings through the press to subscribers that come the end of the 31st, any unregistered line will be taken offline.
The directive to register mobile subscribers was issued by the regulator last year and the initial deadline was 31 August 2010. When it expired, mobile operators requested an extension and it was given to 28 February 2011.
It’s expected the disconnection of unregistered subscribers will see a drop in subscriber numbers. Econet, the largest telecoms firm in Zimbabwe, has the highest subscriber base of over 5 million. Telecel, the second largest by subscriber numbers has about 1.6 million subscribers. The state owned mobile operator NetOne has around a million subscribers.

I doubt Econet will disconnect anyone the way they pride themselves about having 5 million subscribers

It will happen, and I’m looking forward to it!!! When all those subscribers have to choose which replacement line the’ll buy the price wars will BEGIN!!! as all the networks will compete for potential customers.
I think all lines should be blocked after every six months, registered or not!!!! That’ll keep econ$t, Netwhat??? and TeleSALE!!! on their toes!
guys this disconnection is overzealous ,we registered with econet during their mobile outreach in the burning sun and it is bad news for econet becoz someone has to answer.ie consultant of the project or data capturind department.i registered 5 SIMS under my name on the same day/same assistant in Gweru opposite OK stores but only one has not been cut off out of 5.terrible news econet wake up!!!!
what will happen if we dont register those lines now offline.aren’t you not the ones losing customers.are new lines on the market already registered?
