When Econet announced yesterday that it is ready to launch its mobile money service, it also disclosed one interesting number. That number is 6 million. At the end of this month, Econet says it will cross the 6 million mark in mobile subscribers.
It’s no small feat. At the beginning of last year POTRAZ reported that Econet had some 3.2 million subscribers. That’s a near 100% jump in subscribers in less than two years! Considering Zimbabwe’s official population is 12.5 million, this means Econet has nearly half of Zimbabwe’s total population on its network.
Just for comparison, the last report of mobile phone subscribers we got from the telecoms regulator, POTRAZ, had Econet with 4.2 million subscribers, NetOne 1.3 million and Telecel with 1.2 million.
It’s not possible to tell right what the new mobile penetration for the country is without Telecel and NetOne latest figures. We’ll find out and post as soon as have the data.
