The club’s business development officer Shingie Ndiya says they realised that using mobile phones is a powerful and effective way to achieve their goal of promoting financial discipline among members. The club decided to develop its platform after realising that there are challenges around obtaining a short code in Zimbabwe.
Ndiya noted that the sms web server was developed using VBscript and an Access database and an international based web server for redundancy. To ensure maximum uptime the club has an individual whose duties include administering the system.
Ndiya says the idea behind VictoryTxT is to inspire and urge members to diligently pursue their goals.
To access the services of the Savings Club a member has to be paid up VictoryTxT member and this means paying a monthly $5 subscription fee.
With a goal of achieving a member base of 10,000 in the short to medium term the club’s other business objectives of the club include:
- To produce empowered motivated and inspired members who contribute to the wealth of their families and country
- To promote financial discipline and in turn create wealth for family and community
- Opportunities for a learning environment that provides for members to fully realise their potential
- Impart relevant entrepreneurial skills to members to enable them to run their own businesses and create wealth.
The notable features of the platform include:
Sends an sms at a specific time each day. These are action packed, motivational messages designed to inspire members to act
- Smses are personalised and they address each members personal goals
- The system sends each member reminders about the goal that they have set as a means of assisting each member to act and review on them
- Using a network marketing formula club members earn an income by recruiting new members. So the platform acts as an account for all commissions earned. So when a new member is recruited in a member’s downline an sms is sent to inform the member about the new membership and the commission they have earned and their account balance.
- Monthly subscriptions to the VictoryTxT platform are charged at $5 and are purchased as scratch card which is loaded like ordinary airtime (a picture of the scratch card is provided above).
Other than promoting disciplined saving amongst member benefits also include a borrowing facility of up to $2,000 without security and amounts above this require security. Each member contributes $100 per month.
Surely in a country with high levels of financial exclusion as noted in recent Finmark Study this is an innovative leveraging mobile phone technology.

Finally … a startup with an idea that’s genuinely interesting and potentially viable.
Good luck guys. *pamberi nemi*
a link to the website in question would have been helpful
They don’t have a website. But we can give you their contacts if you are interested
that’s a bit disappointing. I really don’t respect a company without a website this days. Let’s hope they rectify that very soon.
Great concept! Zimbabweans are really coming up with innovative ideas.
Is the primary goal social benefit out of the venture or is it to make good profits?
Not sure how the outlook is, but best of luck!
From a tech point of view, I would think VBScript/Access is not a very good decision especially if you happen to scale. Probably alot of investment has gone into it and it is working but IMHO it may be worth your while to consider other technology upon which it runs.
Definitely don’t agree at all. If you are hoping to scale up the best route to go is linux/kannel. This is first time I have heard of an sms platform built using VBScript/Access. Heavy weight platforms I know run on linux/kannel or linux and some open source sms gateway
Actually vbscript is quite a mature server-side scripting language and can get the job done. I assume their system is on ASP.Net technology and it would make sense to use VBscript. .VBScript is designed to work more naturally with
ADODB which i assume since their system is mainly Microsoft tech.
ASP.NET uses VB.NET/C# or any another .NET language.
Where it is used for web, VBScript is for classic ASP, which is outdated and is no longer supported for the web.
VBScript is powerful for automation. Still, I dont think it is an appropriate technology to build such a service on
[Edit]
You can use VBScript on the web. But it is interpretted and they have not improved the language from the time ASP.NET took ship.
yep you are right my mistake, it works on classic ASP. like u said b4 i also think they have invested a lot into the system therefore unwilling to wipe the slate clean. i really doubt the viability of their product though. We shall wait and see.
