Zimbabwe’s internet subscriptions reach 4.5 million

Zimbabwe now has about 4.5 million internet subscribers according to local telecoms regulatory authority POTRAZ. The new internet penetration figure was published today in the state-owned Sunday Mail weekly newspaper. The report unfortunately doesn’t say if this figure represents both mobile and fixed internet subscriptions. The implication is both, but we’ll have to find out from POTRAZ itself to be sure.

POTRAZ’s 2012 second quarter statistics had the mobile internet subscribers at 3.2 million, representing a 26% mobile internet penetration then. The current 4.5 million subscriptions represent 35% internet penetration.

The article also says Zimbabwe’s mobile voice subscriptions are now “more than 10 million”. It’s a figure we couldn’t get what to make of since POTRAZ itself put that figure at 10.9 million back in July 2012. So this could mean no increase was registered, which is unlikely or that they didn’t get an exact figure from POTRAZ. So yeah, for this too we’ll have to check with POTRAZ itself. We already have actually, just haven’t received a response yet for a couple of weeks now, just means nagging them more.
