Stanbic Bank Accused Of Women’s Rights Violations

Stanbic Bank branch China Chinese Imports

Stanbic Bank Zimbabwe seems to be in hot soup as women came out with their claws and are protesting against discrimination at the banks Borrowdale Branch.

The protest banners

There were multiple banners protesting against the abuse of women’s rights at the bank. When we came across this on social media we assumed that this was a new thing but after reaching out to Stanbic we realised this has been going on for a number of years. This is what they had to say concerning the issue:

It’s a matter involving a former female staffer and has been actually going on for a number of years now. The issue is in the courts right now so we are not in a position to comment on it.

Considering the way we stumbled upon this issue hopefully social media does not put it into overdrive. One of the problems of social media is that it makes people judges and executioners over things without clarity. Yes, Stanbic Bank may have done something here but it’s also unfair to them because they might not be in the wrong. All I am saying is let us not use social media to reach judgement because social media rarely gives context on what’s really happening on the ground.

This piece is an opinion disguised as a report. No account of what Stanbic is alleged to have done.

We reached out to Stanbic to try and better understand the situation but they would not disclose to us what the actual situation was

So, essentially you have absolutely no facts on hand, or even allegations in the least, just photos. 😐

    Why not ask the protesters

  4. Hmmm

So you come here to write a whole story without any details beyond a headline to advise people not to use social media to spread stories without fully understanding them? Do better please.

Women! Crafty little creatures, always have to find some issue to sensationalize the day. It could be stanbic bank really did something wrong, but these protesters were just making a mountain out of a molehill politicizing the whole issue. Once, we used to work with a lady in our team and she claimed sexual harassment at work as one of the problems she was facing…simply because it was women’s day(as is always the song)…much to the whole team’s surprise. After the occasion, everyone was simply thinking we are sex perverts who were taking advantage of a poor hardworking lady.

The response captures above comes from a great dark pit in human nature that cannot tolerate strength, guts, dignity and anyone whose words are potent and dares to question abuse in the workplace. It’s intent is to silence the victims. Who can falsely allege sexual harassment? There is nothing to gain from proferring such allegations. Such fearlessness bothers harassers and therefore people who speak out are hated by such people. I have known this kind of response from the community that have maligned and also expressed their hatred after disclosures of sexual harassment in the workplace. It is not surprising that with such vile attitudes victims of abuse are afraid of speaking out and being stigmatised. If that is threatened, their fear spills out. I hope these women speak out about what is troubling them, the placards are the beginning. They hold the only hope for our society and our mothers, sisters and children in the banking sector. Ironically the harassers don’t want anyone messing up with their wives, girl friends, sisters and daughters.
