When most people hear of hacking they are rarely aware that there are actually good hackers. These good hackers are more commonly known as ethical hackers. As with most good guys, ethical hackers rarely make the headlines but they are very important.
Who is offering the course?
The courses are being offered on the Guru99 website. Apart from these courses, the site also offers tutorials on other things like Photoshop, Excel, BigData, Digital Marketing and other topics so it might be worth checking and see if they offer anything you are interested in.
What is Ethical Hacking?
An ethical hacker is “a skilled professional who understands and knows how to look for weaknesses and vulnerabilities in target systems and uses the same knowledge and tools as a malicious hacker, but in a lawful and legitimate manner to assess the security posture of a target system(s).”
Ethical hacking is in essence ‘good hacking.’ If I were to give a comparison or analogy I would say ethical hacking is like white magic whilst the more commonly referred to hacking is more akin to black magic.
The difference is that this hacking that we know more commonly is usually carried out with sinister intent whilst ethical hacking is done prevent to prevent the ‘cool’ hackers from getting their job done. For example, an ethical hacker working for a company would try to stop unethical hackers like anonymous. Even though they have their own beliefs and motivations that might seem humanitarian the type of hacking carried out by anonymous is considered to be unethical.
Course Structure
Anyway, back to the topic at hand. The course is structured in such a way that your knowledge will be built from the basics towards the more advanced stuff. The first topic you will learn is ‘What is Hacking?’ as most would expect. After that you go onto topics such as Top 6 Ethical Hacking Tools, Wireshark Tutorials, Hacking Linux Systems, 10 Most Common Web Security Vulnerabilities etc. The course has over 15 topics and should hopefully help you get a good understanding of how hacking works.
Oh, and you may be asking ‘what level of understanding when I take this course?’ None. As indicated above the topic starts from the basic stuff so even if you have no knowledge you can just dive in head stuff and figure out if you are up to the task or not.
There’s no certification… but that was to be expected
There’s no certification. That may put other people off but I don’t think that’s a big deal since the course is FREE after all! Any certification would have been a pleasant surprise.
This might also be a good tool to use to see if this kind of a career path interests you but you are yet to actually dip your toes. The free course might help you decide if you this stuff actually interests you or if you should look elsewhere.
If you are interested in checking out the hacking tutorial you can do so here.
We haven’t reviewed the courses ourselves but as something that is being offered at no cost at all, I feel I can recommend these courses and if a user is not satisfied with the quality of information they get they can walk away knowing that you did not waste your ‘oh-so-precious’ funds.
I might take this course as it is something that interests me and if I find it to be worthwhile we will meet again on this blog and I will share my thoughts about the course and what I have learnt from it…
