ZTA Aims To Boost Tourism With An Online Platform To Register Houses And Lodges For Accomodation

The tourism and hospitality sector will find a new impetus to increase tourism by harnessing the internet to provide relatively cheap and convenient accommodation for tourists. This comes in the background that, the Tourism and Hospitality Ministry is creating an online platform to register houses and lodges to boost tourism.

Tourism and Hospitality Industry seems like its taking its cue from The Rainbow Tourism Group’s (RTG) initiative which saw it registering houses and hotels on its RTG gateway App. RTG reportedly raked in 10% of the $1.5million revenue through its online platform.

Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister, Prisca Mupfumira said registration is already in progress, having started two months ago and the platform will be operational by July this year.

We are in the process of registering online all these small accommodation facilities, the SMEs and ensure that at a punch of a button, that in Highfield or Mbare (for example) there is such a home away from the hotel,” the minister said.

In a nutshell, the government is promoting the sharing economy.

A sharing economy is a nascent economic model which focuses on the sharing of underutilized assets, monetized or not, facilitated by a community based online platform. The model is popularly used by Airbnb, HomeAway, Uber, Lyft etc.

In tourism’s context, houses or lodges or apartments that are not occupied could be listed for ready use on the online platform thereby offering convenience to tourists if they are in areas where hotels are not available.

An online platform would also help tourists to browse through a wide variety of accommodation to choose from wherever they are.

Why not encourage house owners and lodge managers to register on already approved share platforms like AirBnB rather than trying to create something new? There will be costs to marketing this platform and adoption will be slow

the kind that always suppress local projects because of other bigger projects.even the airbnb started small as well so encourage such things locally man.

I don’t think you fully appreciate the appeal AirBnB has out there. If our target market is people in other countries, why not advertise on platforms they are already familiar with? Countries all over the world have some sort of Uber like taxi service, but when you travel, do you look for the local taxi app or you use Uber you are already familiar with?

Airbnb has appeal to tourists as it is a worldwide known facility. I would rather we stick with Airbnb for starters

But airbnb does not allow payments using ecocash/paynow ..does it ?.. There is something called context .the wheel has already been invented but u need a wheel that suits yo environment and terrain . There is Jumia travel and Hotels.ng which have raised millions of funding and are profitable because of their appeal to our environment (Nigera)

Does Airbnb allow payments by ecocash/zimswitch ? How many people do have mastercard in ZIM and allows payment in bond notes ?There is something called context .Its very important and many people overlook it. but it affects adoption of a technology . Hotels.ng and h=jumia nigeria have raised millions in funding for these african platforms,, we have iroko tv a netflix for nigerian movies ..we need something that fits our environment No need to reinvent the wheel but there are many brands of the same wheel design depending on terrain , environment , cost and perfomance … Actually the wheel has been reinvented .After using the same design for thousands of years we need an upgrade .lols check out here https://sharkwheel.com/
