Days of ignoring someone’s messages and continuing to scroll through to other messages on Instagram might have come to an end. As announced in an official blog post, Instagram had added a green dot feature, next to the profile icon of your friends (or followers), showing you when they’re available to chat. The green dot is called, ‘Activity Status’.
What this entails is users will now be able to see exactly when their friends are online and available to chat. The dot will be seen in Instagram Direct as well as your friend list when you share a post from the feed. To get this feature, you just have to update to the version of Instagram
This new feature is a mimic of the Messenger app, both of which continue to be used extensively for chatting and both owned by Facebook.
According to Instagram, when your friends are active on Instagram, you will see a green dot next to their profile picture in various spaces within the app, including the Direct inbox and your friend list when you share a post from the feed. However, you will only see the status of friends who follow you or people who you have talked to in Direct.
In case you don’t like the new feature, you can easily hide your own status and turn off the ability to see, (with Activity Status) when your friends are active in your settings.
Of course, Instagram pins its faith on this feature to add more engagement on the platform if users know that their friends are available to chat.
