WhatsApp Working On New Windows Application That Might Make Your Lumia Relevant

Yesterday we published an article stating that WhatsApp support for your Lumia would be ending at the end of this year. A recent tweet by WABetaInfo shows that all hope is not lost. WhatsApp is working on a new application that will be coming to UWP (Universal Windows Platform) at some point.

UWP??

Universal Windows Platform (UWP) is an open source API created by Microsoft and first introduced in Windows 10. The purpose of this platform is to help develop universal apps that run on Windows 10, Windows 10 Mobile, Xbox One and HoloLens without the need to be re-written for each. UWP apps do not run on earlier versions of Windows which suggests that the WhatsApp support being discontinued is for older versions of WhatsApp. It’s also unlikely that application will support platforms such as HoloLens and Xbox One.

When will the app be available?

The application coming to UWP will arrive before the end of the year according to WABetaInfo and it’s slated to support both desktop and mobile which means some devices on Windows will continue to be supported. It’s not entirely clear which ones will make the cut but hopefully every Windows phone running Windows Mobile 10 will get support.
