Liquid introduces exciting new unlimited packages at impressive speeds

Leonard Sengere Avatar

They say competition benefits users and I think we can add that even the threat of competition has the same effect. That’s what most people think is the reason why Liquid (formerly Zol) has exciting new unlimited packages we will be talking about.

We got to ask Liquid what motivated the new packages and they say it had nothing to do with that other company that I shall not name. It was simply their own marketing initiative.

Listen, in all likelihood, that other company is responsible. However, that does not matter one bit, who cares if that’s the case. What we have here are exciting new products and I for one will not be looking this horse in the mouth.

Infinity packages

All the packages we are talking about today offer unlimited data. I guess it’s more technical to say they are uncapped. They look like this:

Home:

  • Infinity 99 – costs $99 a month at up to 75Mbps
  • Infinity 129 – costs $129 a month at up to 100Mbps
  • Infinity 169 – costs $169 a month at up to 150Mbps
  • Infinity 89 – costs $89 a month at up to 20Mbps ( This one is the sole new Wibronix package, and so if you’re on fibre it’s not available to you. The 3 above are Fibronix only)

This is more like it. Look at those speeds. I know some might wonder about how real those speeds are. Well, right now I’m on a 50Mbps package and that’s mostly what I get when there are no fibre cuts anywhere. I did test what kind of speeds Liquid themselves enjoy at their HQ and … yeah.

Mine has 47.4 down, 47.3 up and Liquid’s has 237 down, 295 up.

On prices, would I have wanted to see a $50 option? Of course. I would have loved it to be free but I think the above packages are a good step in the right direction. I think in time prices will only go down further.

That has been the trend in most developing countries and GMSA says that has been down to regulatory reforms, increased competition, and infrastructural investments. In Zimbabwe and a few other countries we were not really seeing this but we seem to have turned a corner.

Until we get there, my only hope is that Liquid brings the $89/20Mbps deal to Fibronix users too. Or if you’ll allow me to daydream here, how about a $50/10Mbps one too?

Business:

  • Biz Infinity 99 – costs $99 a month at up to 25Mbps
  • Biz Infinity 149 – costs $149 a month at up to 50Mbps
  • Biz Infinity 275 – costs $275 a month at up to 75Mbps
  • Biz Infinity 569 – costs $569 a month at up to 100Mbps
  • Biz Infinity 99 – costs $99 a month at up to 20Mbps ( This one is the sole new Wibronix package. The 4 above are Fibronix only)

Good to see

It’s not everyday that you see price cuts and so I’m one happy camper. Do I think there’s room for prices to tumble even further? – yes, of course. However, this is a positive thing that should be celebrated.

Do note that the packages are promotional, which means this is not really the new Liquid pricing but rather we will revert to old prices when the promotion ends.

Liquid did say this promotion will be run indefinitely and so there’s that. That essentially means it’s as good as a price cut. We can treat it as such.

However, it’s a good business move in that it allows Liquid to tweak things later without much fuss. Should it happen that capacity is a problem or that hypothetically speaking, a certain competitor never materialises, the promotion can be scrapped. It’s a good business move setting it up this way.

What of the competition?

Liquid is not the only game in town and I know you guys have spreadsheets comparing various packages from different service providers. That is the lucky few that have multiple providers to choose from, I know many locations have just one option.

For those that were (are?) looking at that other yet-to-come competitor, how would you compare what they have to offer with what Liquid has here? Seeing as Liquid equipment is much cheaper, the subscriptions have gone down and all things being equal, fibre should be more reliable, does this change things for you?

Oh, and I found out some were wondering why we act as if Liquid does not have competition right now when we talk about that other looming competitor. That’s actually a compliment to Liquid.

We have found that most people who have access to multiple service providers prefer Liquid (especially Fibronix), the only real complaint being the cost, although service interruptions have been a problem in the last couple of years.

nothing exciting here, i will wait for Starlink

Latency is way better on Fibre than Starlink. I would rather have 75Mbps on Fibre than 150Mbps on Starlink. Starlink will likely be $99 per month.
I’ve tried both. Sticking with Fibre.
Unless you referring to the new Starlink @350km, but those will like be some years before deployment. They have to launch some 35,000 satellites. Then the latency will be competitive with Fibre.

I would expect the latency issue to be as you say for information that is hosted or catched on local data centers as, with the local service provider, access is more direct, unlike for the Leo satellite provider where you go from your device to the satellite, down to the control centre, wherever it may be, onto the landbased infrastructure to get to the data center here, and back the same route to your device.
Please try them both also with information hosted and catched on foreign data centers and let us know the latency comparison.

it’s because we being ripped off. so we willing to take the hit. we paying premium dollar for nothing

      2. Starlink Pamusoro

You realise liquid was forced into this by starlink coming here, right? The ISPs know on aggregate, they were providing substandard service. As for starlink, remember they launched on the premise of ‘better than nothing’. That still applies here. Liquid could pop out a gigabit up/down package tomorrow, but it means nothing to you if they still won’t dig to your neighbourhood. Pick the right tool for the job

Currently using the Wibroniks USD Promo bundle that gives you 100gb + 100gb bonus for 50USD 15 days + 15 Rollover. I can say that the first 100gb still burns through pretty quick but its acceptable. The second 100gb will melt away ridiculously!!! RIDICULOUSLY!!! Since the ZiG rollover bundles just melt away with nothing to show for it. You almost need 89USD to survive a month of mostly evening usage. I used to spend the equivalent of about 60 usd tops to use data for A WHOLE MONTH.

They seem to have decided to psuedo price hike to replace their projected lost revenues to STARLINK. This is actually radicalising me and makes me more determined to dump them as soon as possible. I will lead a campaign against them!!! In fact what happen to the Chinese Satellite Internet G60? All the companies must come into our market and the weak(Liquid) suffer what they must!!!

They over hyped it, but apparently they plan to have thousands of satellites up by next year

I was shocked to notice that Tel One is allowed to get away with an exchange rate of 40!
Compare the usd prices against the Zig ones on the Chommie…
How is this thing STILL being allowed.
Semi government institutions are still being allowed to sell exclusively in USD also…..
    FED UP

On top of that the prices for installation of fibre are STUPID!

    1. 😂

Go pay for starlink $600 my wise (wo)man

  6. D.K.

How can we trust them if they had very high speed equipment installed but were deliberately slowing down the speed, until a bolt came from the blue?
Since most, if not all these packages seem aimed at businesses, I hope they are considering tariffs for homes, individuals and students.
To say the promotion is permanent is like saying an allowance on the payslip is permanent. Just look at what happened to the COVID allowance!

Bandwidth throttling is still a major obstacle on our market. Absolutely no honesty

This service must be available every corner of the streets in Harare. But when they speak about a product which is not available even around places like Livingstone cnr 8 street Liquid tells us that they have no lines or they are over subscribed that means they have no capacity to give the service to all .

    1. Anonimasi

True, they should address the issue of lines availability. Tanzwa

    2. D.K.

Listening to those who have the LTE Sims for wibroniks, it is as if the sold and bought secretly, almost like done with drugs. I wonder how many of those Sims from the underground black market are in the name of the posessors. At the service centre they always say there are no Sims available or the base station in your area has no capacity for more Sims and will be upgraded soon, or there is no service in your area.

    3. Anonymous

They can even announce speeds faster than light for free, what will the point be if no one can get the lines?

Lol, speaking of new things, the backpack StarLink & packages are still cheaper.

For your average consumer you have to stick with Telone. Liquid has always been out of reach for the majority of people. Mobile is too expensive to watch Netflix/Youtube on a daily basis for a few hours.

This is good business sense. CEO is snoozing away the $ and better market penetration

  20. Internet Mafia

The internet mafia is freaking out. They should just drop prices, disruption is here. Why say it’s a promotion though? Economic challenges aside, a lot of these Zim companies hold the market ransom until someone else comes and prices the product/service right and all of a sudden we don’t get the same story from that point on. Next is the banks.

  21. Phillip Peters

The naming is stupid to say the least why prefix the Price to the Infinity. What if the price changes, they could have named their packages Infinity 75, Infinity 100, Infinity 150
