Microsoft’s Master Plan: If You Can’t Beat ’Em, Hide ’Em. Now Hiding Chrome Download Links

Microsoft’s Master Plan: If You Can’t Beat ’Em, Hide ’Em. Now Hiding Chrome Download Links

If you ever wondered what a strong mix of desperation and silliness would look like, look no further. Microsoft has implemented an update that obscures the Google Chrome download link when users search for it on Bing, promoting Microsoft Edge instead.

What did you expect them to do when you made all those jokes about Edge only existing to download Chrome?

A prominent banner now appears when searching for Chrome, featuring a message that encourages users to stick with Microsoft Edge, making the Chrome link less visible.

The Google Chrome download link now goes behind a See more button.

The banner is clearly labelled “Promoted by Microsoft” so that there’s no confusion about who is responsible.

It reads “There’s no need to download a new web browser. Microsoft recommends using Microsoft Edge for a fast, secure, and modern web experience that can help save you time and money.”

The changes are designed to mislead non-tech-savvy users who may not distinguish between Bing and Google or Edge and Chrome.

I can see some users using being their search for Chrome at that. With how decent Edge now is, they likely wouldn’t feel like they were getting a bad experience either.

This tactic is just the latest of anti-competitive practices between Microsoft and Google, with both companies employing strategies to undermine each other’s services.

Hiding Google Search too

Microsoft is also trying to trick people into believing they are using Google when they are using Bing. They made their search bar almost identical to Google’s.

In addition, they are now hiding the Google link which appears when you scroll down. Instead of a Google search link, you’ll now find a large Microsoft search bar featuring an animated design similar to Google Search.

There’s also now a new See more button, which needs to be clicked to open Google search links.

You shouldn’t have laughed at Microsoft and their Bing and Edge products. Look what you have made them stoop down to.
