Microsoft is not having it anymore. They tried to the carrot for years but you still wouldn’t upgrade from Windows 10 to 11. It’s now time for the stick and this one just might convince enterprises that had no plans to upgrade – Microsoft 365 apps will not be supported from 14 October 2025.
Yes, Microsoft will no longer support Office apps from that date. You will remember that date is also the same one that Windows 10 support ends too.
This simply means if your business uses the likes of Word and Excel or the other 365 apps, you will have to upgrade to Windows 11 to keep using them. Here is what Microsoft says:
Microsoft 365 Apps will no longer be supported after October 14, 2025, on Windows 10 devices. To use Microsoft 365 Applications on your device, you will need to upgrade to Windows 11.
The language makes it seem like you won’t be able to use the apps at all after that date. Fortunately, that’s not the case. The apps will continue working after that date even if you don’t upgrade to Windows 11.
However, Microsoft says after Windows 10 support is dropped, there could be performance and reliability issues after that. Which makes sense because for some reason, even software tends to face issues over time, sort of like how flesh rots.
So, you will be able to keep using your Office apps but should expect to face little issues here and there over time if you do so on Windows 10.
When it comes to security though, Microsoft won’t be dropping support completely for all Windows 10 users. However, this extended support will not be for free. Microsoft is offering Extended Security Updates for Windows 10 users.
Individuals will have to pay $30 for an extra year of updates. After that year, that’s it. You won’t be able to pay your way to Windows 10 security updates. There won’t be any.
Businesses get the same offer and can get the extended support for 3 years and no more.
What’s your take?
