Apple Patents a Smartwatch with a Removable Body and a Band that Tracks Health

Apple has been granted a patent for an innovative Apple Watch design featuring a detachable watch body. This allows health sensors in the band to continue monitoring the user’s health metrics even when the watch body is removed.

The patent describes a watch with a watch body and a band device that can be used together or independently of one another.

I am all for this because one of the main reasons I got a smartwatch was to track my sleep. However, although the Apple Watch is one of the thinner options available, it still gets uncomfortable sometimes.

If I could remove the watch body at night, that would be worth an upgrade. I’m not too thrilled about having a band on my arm every single day with no charging breaks, but that’s the price we’ll have to pay for 24-hour health monitoring.

Key Features of the Patent

  • Detachable Watch Body: The design enables users to remove the watch body from the band without interrupting health monitoring functions. This could be particularly useful for charging or when the user prefers a lighter setup.
  • Health Sensors in the Band: By integrating health sensors directly into the band, continuous tracking of metrics such as heart rate, activity levels, and other vital signs is possible, independent of the watch body.
  • Enhanced User Convenience: This configuration allows users to charge or temporarily detach the watch body while maintaining uninterrupted health data collection, improving the overall user experience.

We have no idea when (or if) this design will make it into a device we can buy, but we can at least appreciate the idea.
