One of the biggest technology trade shows in the world, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) just kicked off and there’s a lot to marvel about.
The show is held annually in Las Vegas and I’m happy to give you some of the highlights so far. Listen, I wrote that to appear as if I’m there in person, I’m not. I’m writing this on battery power because there is no electricity, that should tell you where I am.
Anyway, here are some of the devices that caught my eye:
Samsung Frame Pro TV
Samsung has a range of TVs called the ‘Frame’ and their whole deal is that they turn the display into art when you’re not using the TV.
So, rather than have a huge black rectangle on your wall when you’re otherwise engaged, you’ll get pieces of art. Samsung calibrated the thing so well that it really looks like a framed picture or painting on your wall and not a TV displaying an image.
The Frame Pro takes it to the next level from the Frames we’ve seen before. It now syncs up wirelessly to the Wireless One Connect Box for transmitting material from a set-top box like your DStv or Openview one.
That means the illusion of it being an art piece on the wall is magnified because you don’t have to hide any wires coming from the TV.
It’s not just the wiring situation that got an update. The Frame Pro now also sports Samsung’s Neo QLED which should make for better image quality.
Carbonated water on the go
I don’t think there is anything that tastes as bad as sparkling (carbonated) water. I know some people claim to love it but I think they only say that because they mistakenly think it makes them sound cool.
However, if you’re one of the seven people in the world that truly like it, you will love the Roam SodaTop.
It is a water bottle that uses a small carbon dioxide cartridge to carbonate water in the bottle. So, you can have carbonated water anywhere if you remember to take your water bottle with you.
It’s impressive that they managed to get the cartridge on a normal looking water bottle. So, you can have your sparkling water but with no one the wiser to that. Which I presume defeats the purpose of sparkling water, but maybe that’s just me being a hater.
Gardening from the sofa
I don’t usually leave the house but when I did recently, I saw the forests you guys are keeping in your yards. It’s understandable, with the rainy season upon us, it’s hard to keep the lawn trimmed and proper.
So, I guess this is where robot lawn mowers come in. These lawn mowers will do the mowing for you whilst you laze around on your sofa.
The problem has always been that most of the robot mowers on sale where tiny and would have challenges dealing with the forests I saw where your lawns are supposed to be.
That’s where the Lymow One comes in. It has those tracks that tanks have (tank wheels if you can call them that). So it can get around quite easily on rough terrain. They call the tank-like tracks Savage Traverse System and that should tell you what we’re dealing with.
So, this robot lawn mower can go pretty much anywhere, but what happens when it meets obstacles? Well, it has mulching blades that are strong enough to crush leaves, fruit, pine cones and small branches.
Once crushed, the material is spread out by a fan and so even the mulching is done for you.
So, you just set the mower loose in your yard and it will trim the grass and mulch the rest for you.
The mower has obstacle recognition and avoidance tech and so Rex should be safe living with the thing.
This level of convenience won’t come cheap as you may have suspected. The Lymow One costs $3000 in the States and so expect it to cost significantly more in Zimbabwe after shipping, taxes etc.
Kindle + Phone combo
If you ever use a Kindle or any other e-ink device for reading, a normal tablet or phone screen just won’t do anymore.
An e-ink display offers better readability as it mimics real paper. You know how smartphone screens seem washed out and harder to read when you’re out in the sun? E-ink readers behave like paper and are more legible the brighter it is out there.
This also comes with battery efficiency benefits. You can go for over 6 weeks on a single charge on a Kindle Paperwhite for example.
TCL had an idea. What if you didn’t have to buy a phone and an e-ink reader separately? What if you could combine those devices?
That is what the TCL 60 XE NxtPaper 5G is all about.
It is a smartphone with a normal screen like the one on yours. However, it has a mode that allows it to mimic an e-ink reader both in the visual style (better readability) and also battery life.
It’s been done before, this combo stuff, but the tech has only gotten better.
That’s it for now. We will be sharing more fun gadgets we come across. You won’t be able to buy everything we talk about but it should show you where the tech is going.
What’s your take?
