NetOne, Zimbabwe’s state owned mobile operator, today started and advertising campaign for Internet services. The adverts promise NetOne is going to deliver “the world like you’ve never seen or heard it”.
Starting last week, NetOne has been making statements in the press notifying Zellco NetOne subscribers that the relationship with Zellco, its service provider, has been severed. As a NetOne service provider, Zellco signed up new post-paid customers and collected revenue on behalf of NetOne for a fee.
Gemalto, an international digital security company, announced today that NetOne is deploying a Gemalto mobile money transfer solution called LinqUs for the OneWallet service. Telecel, the second largest mobile operator in Zimbabwe by subscriber base, has accused state owned (and smallest) mobile operator, NetOne, of refusing to share tower infrastructure. Telecel Zimbabwe CEO, Mr. Aimable Mpore made the accusation in a response to questions about Telecel’s shareholding structure from the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Media, Information and Communication Technology.
Yesterday, state owned mobile operator, NetOne, started an advertising campaign for a new mobile voice package called Relaks. The package promises lower tariffs and free SMSes. We contacted NetOne today and they sent us a press release prepared to announce the new package.
In December 2010 NetOne introduced a promotion where prepaid subscribers buying a US $15 airtime recharge would get 107 free minutes. This was all grand and fine except that it’s really just a few prepaid subscribers who can afford buying a $15 recharge at once.
NetOne’s newest and pioneering product, OneWallet mobile money transfer solution was successfully launched to stakeholders in the city of Harare recently. OneWallet is a cocktail of services that include, sending cash, receiving cash, topping up own account, topping up another’s, account and paying bills via the mobile phone.
This project had a positive impact to society in that NetOne bridged the communication divide in all ten provinces of Zimbabwe were power outages are frequent. NetOne set up solar powered base stations in hard hit areas such that there is constant connectivity for the masses in the affected areas.
Since the directive to register SIM cards was issued by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) NetOne maintained in the press that their subscribers were registered. Statements like the following one in The Herald of 22 June were common:
