DStv Zimbabwe prices will increase slightly in starting 1 August 2024. The new prices were announced today with the company citing increased operating costs as reason.

Said Multichoice on its social handles:

Dear Valued Customer

Stiff Competition

Multichoice faces stiff competition for subscribers from rivals on multiple fronts. Only subscribers looking for hassle free access to live sports remain the only ones that cannot get their treat elsewhere.

For all other consumers there are various options available now including:

  • OpenView which, once installed, does not require any subscriptions
  • Zimbabwe’s Zim Digital Transmedia Decoder. This one has been dubbed Zimbabwe’s OpenView because it also doesn’t require subscription once installed.
  • Streaming services like Netflix and Showmax are now an option for those who can afford the internet data required. The monthly subscription is much lower averaging less than $10 a month.
  • Illegal streams: There are also illegal streaming sites site as Goojara, which are extremely popular for people looking to watch latest movies they have heard about. These services have replaced the guys that sell DVDs in the cities.

All these alternative services have resulted in some subscribers not renewing subscriptions despite several efforts by Multichoice to lure them back with promotions.

DStv Subscriber Numbers

In its FY24 report published in last month, Multichoice reported that it has lost some 1.2 million subscribers outside South Africa in just 1 year. In total it now has 8.1 millions subscribers, down from 9.3m in 2023

This puts Multichoice in a tight spot where, they know they are losing subscribers to competition but their costs are also increasing and find they need to increase prices or go out of business.

Access is definitely not worth USD15. I think it is only worth USD8 monthly. I only get DSTV when they offer me a special. Other than that I do not subscribe monthly.

I’d pay Netflix and enjoy a whole lot.

It’s better to use Goojara and Tfpdl than paying DSTV coz no one watches TV for long hours these days…plus their news is not reliable they just feed you with propaganda X and telegram are more reliable on news.

Typical. Another increase being shouldered by those who can least afford. Why dont you whack $10 on the people with premium and compact plus and leave the little man alone with his already excessive $19. No you wont do that will you.? Might affect you and your mates with your plush offices and fancy company cars.

Yaaa Zimbabwe is a very tricky and ever unstable environment to operating in. Having that said, Dstv is also loosing customers becoz of access to (multiple entertainment platforms). On the other side there is that one called MEDIASTAR / STARsat/ TIK TOK DECODER. Pple are turning to these options

Has anyone been able to pay for showmax online? Ever since they relaunched February this I havent been able to pay for the service.

Y’all know that Showmax is owned by Multichoice right. In terms of losing customers. I don’t really think Zimbabwe is there target market considering the fact that Zimbabwe has a very unreliable and unstable economic environment. They actually target SA,Zambia,Botswana,Namibia, and other Eastern African countries with better economies. As for Zimbabweans we have an advantage of reaching out to our relatives in SA in case we need to go for the alternative and subscribe as SA account incase they decided to shutdown Zimbabwe altogether. But as you’ve mentioned earlier only customers who need to watch live sports are the only ones still going for DSTV, coz no one really watches tv these days most programs and films are now available on demand and on streaming services.
